Strong, natural-looking protection for damaged or weakened teeth

Dental crowns remain one of the most reliable solutions for restoring teeth that are broken, heavily filled, worn down or weakened. At the Duffield Dental Practice we create high-quality crowns designed to look and feel like natural teeth giving you long-lasting strength and confidence in your smile.

Every crown is individually crafted for the perfect fit, colour and shape helping you eat, speak and smile comfortably again.

A crown is a protective cap that covers the entire surface of a tooth. It restores:

  • Strength
  • Shape
  • Function
  • Appearance

Crowns are ideal when a filling is no longer strong enough to support the tooth or when previous damage needs reinforcing.

They are widely used in both cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry giving you a natural- looking long-lasting result.

A crown may be recommended if you have:

  • A broken or fractured tooth
  • A heavily filled tooth at risk of cracking
  • A tooth weakened after root canal treatment
  • A misshapen or discoloured tooth
  • Significant enamel wear

Our dentists will always explain options and alternatives

1. Porcelain / Ceramic Crowns

Highly aesthetic and ideal for front teeth. They blend with your natural smile.

2. Zirconia Crowns

Incredibly strong and durable, zirconia crowns are perfect for patients needing high strength without compromising appearance.

3. Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)

A combination of metal strength with a porcelain exterior. Often recommended for back teeth with high biting forces.

4. Gold Crowns

Extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth. Gold crowns are less common today but remain an excellent choice for suitable cases.

We will  help you choose the best material based on the tooth’s position, your preferences and your long-term dental health.

1. Consultation and Assessment

The dentist will examine the tooth requiring crowning, establishing the vitality of the tooth and take digital X-rays if needed and discuss your treatment options.

2. Crown preparation appointment

The tooth requiring the crown is anaesthetised using numbing gel and local anaesthetic.

The damaged or weakened tooth is carefully shaped to make room for the crown. This step is comfortable and completed gently.

3. Digital Scans or Impressions

Precise digital scans are used where the dentist uses a scanning wand to record your prepared tooth and the opposing teeth and also to record the way your teeth meet.

Occasionally impressions ( moulds) are taken instead of scanning.

The scan or impressions allow the lab technician to ensure your new crown fits perfectly.

4. Shade Matching

The dentist, nurse and patient together select the colour to blend with surrounding teeth. Your crown should blend naturally with your smile.

5. Temporary Crown

A temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth while the final version is created.

6. Final Crown Fitting

The temporary crown is removed and your custom-made crown is cemented into place.  The dentist checks your bite, comfort and makes sure that you are happy with the appearance of your new crown.

7. Follow-Up and Long-Term Support

The crown is reviewed at future check up appointments to ensure it remains healthy and secure.

  • Protect weakened teeth
  • Restore strength and function
  • Improve the appearance of damaged teeth
  • Long-lasting and durable
  • Colour-matched for a natural smile
  • Prevent further cracking or decay

Crowns are a dependable solution for restoring your smile and maintaining oral health.

Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene play a big part in keeping your crown strong and healthy.

“Crowns are only for older people.”
Not true – crowns are used at all ages when a tooth is too damaged for a filling.

“Crowns will look obvious.”
Modern crowns are natural looking. The shade, shape, and translucency of the crown is matched to your existing teeth.

“Crowns are painful.”
Treatment is gentle, comfortable, and performed with local anaesthetic.

“A crown means the tooth is fixed forever.”
Crowns protect a tooth, but regular care and routine visits are still essential to maintain long-term health.

You can care for your crown much like a natural tooth:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Clean between the teeth
  • Keep regular hygienist visits
  • Avoid biting very hard objects (e.g., ice, pen tops)
  • Attend routine check-ups at the practice

We will provide personalised advice to help your crown stay in excellent condition.

A crown may be the right choice if:

  • You want to protect a weakened tooth
  • You want to improve the appearance of a damaged tooth
  • You’ve had a root canal
  • You need to support a bridge
  • You want a long-lasting, natural-looking restoration

Our caring dentists will guide you through your options and help you make an informed decision.
